Villainy is an interesting concept, one that is very much in the eye of the beholder. One might envision the ideal villain as Maleficent, or perhaps you might rethink the concept as something a little more subtle. Disney is a masterclass of villains, offering a large array of prototypes. From the conniving nature of Jafar, set on usurping the throne, to the stuck up hyper masculine nature of Gaston, set on always getting the girl he can never have. Regardless of purpose, the evil plot is nevertheless a reason for most to dislike them. But when it comes to Mayor Bellwether, one would usually not suspect the “wolf in sheep’s clothing.

But ideally, a villain should be easy to dislike from the very start. This, of course, requires context and build-up so that when a resolution is finally reached, it is either satisfying or redeeming. But how does one introduce a villain? Should it be subtle or outright? Toon dove into just this topic, going into the specifics of how to introduce the integral villain of a story.
