Special Art of the Day #454: Qalcove – an Appreciation, Pt. 2

I Can’t Work Like This by Qalcove

Hey Judy, stay on your own side of the fourth wall, why don’tcha?

—————————–<=[]=>———————————–

Hello again everyone, and welcome to Part 2 of our Qalcove Appreciation collection.

Today’s album is a mix of some of our favorite Qal pieces from previous galleries, plus some we had on hand but haven’t posted yet and even a few recently discovered images. (Our featured pic is one of these.)  We top things off with a series of images created as gifts and/or tributes to Qal.

Enjoy…and don’t forget to show Qalcove some love if you ever cross paths with her, either online or IRL.

————————————————————————————————————-

Our first image was the cover pic of our latest Summertime Collection.   Qalcove’s artwork has been the featured image in many an Art of the Day gallery…as you’ll see for yourself below.

This one was the cover of our Easter Collection.  I was privileged to attend the livestream where Qal created this masterpiece.  She was such a delight to see working, and was even open to taking a few suggestions. (The bowed handle on Nick’s net.)

This one was the featured image of last year’s Christmas Collection.  It just barely beat out the image below for that honor.

This one almost became the cover of our Christmas collection–except that’s not Nick and Judy in the pic, it’s a pair of OCs (Original Characters.)  More’s the pity, because I absolutely love this piece.  The squirrel playing Cupid on top of the fox’s head is Qalcove’s fursona.  (You’ll see more of her shortly.)

And here’s some more Qalcove pics from our Christmas Collections

I say…is there something just a tiny bit familiar about that snow figure?

Next we present a series of images Qalcove created for the Zinktober challenge.

This may be the most relatable picture Qalcove ever created.

I’d love to have seen Qal do a fully realized version of this one.  Look at Judy’s face; what an amazing piece of work this is.

Of course Qal had to include at least one feral pic for Zinktober; she’s just so good at these.

And, of course, she also included a crossover pic, another one of her fortes.

This is kind of a rare one.  Qalcove almost never drew pics of Zootopia’s secondary characters, (without either Nick or Judy in the frame that is.)

This pic is from the second livestream of Qal’s that I attended.  (I especially like her rendering of little Nick at top center).  She did this in a tandem stream with Beatz another of our favorites at drawing Nick and Judy in Feral form.

Detail from the above image.  I don’t think Nick can hold out for very much longer.

This one was the cover of our ‘Someone’s in the Kitchen’ collection, gallery dedicated to all thing culinary.  It’s one of my personal favorite Qalcove pieces.

And wouldn’t you know it, she later created a whole series of images, wrapped around the same theme.  Featured here for the first time.  (Not complete.)

And finally…this pic by Samur Shalem was created as part of an art-trade with Qalcove, a trade that sadly, she was never able to fulfill.  The lynx on her right is the fursona of CasVoiceActs, another one of her fans.  As you may have guessed from this piece, Qal is an avid surfer.

And that leads us to…

Art Trade by @SamurShalem
Source [55]

This pic holds the record of having appeared in more Art of the Day collections than any other image…and it’s easy to see why.  You can almost hear the roar of the surf and feel the spray in your face when you look at it.  And is that saltwater I smell?  The expression on Judy’s face is just pitch perfect.

Ride on, Qal.  Wherever you go in life, may you always catch the curl.

Until next time…we leave you with this musical thought.

For Qalcove…

  1. Oh these are fantastic. I’m really curious at what the story behind #37 was suppose to be.

  2. I couldn’t make a single image as delightfully expressive as any of these if I tried for a year. From someone you don’t know Qalcove, thanks for all the wonderful art!

  3. Actually, I’m pretty sure Qal was able to complete the art trade with Samur. Qal was first to draw, then Samur drew the picture above. And I remember because Samur commented something about having to do it sooner than he thought because she posted her part of the trade. I suppose you can ask Samur to share the picture she drew if he has it.
