Art of the Day # 496: Zinktober, What a Concept!

Hello again, everyone. Before we put Zinktober 2020 to bed, we have one final collection to share with you.

This one is a personal project of mine. While collating the pics for the other Zinktober collections, I came up with an idea for a challenge of my own; create a Zinktober gallery from existing pieces of Zootopia fanart.

Well, that challenge turned out to be a mite too easy, and so I raised the stakes a little. The collection below was put together entirely from Zootopia concept-art. Admittedly these pics are a mixed bag; while some were intended for the never-finished ‘Tame Collar’ version of Zootopia, others were conceived in support of the final, theatrical version.  In either case, the Disney artists were more than equal to our 2020 Zinktober Challenge….and when you scroll down, I think you’ll agree.  Enjoy…and don’t forget to show the original artists some love by clicking on the source-links.

Here, again, are The Rules; (last time, we promise.)

And now, let’s get to the artwork

Day 1 – Badge
Early concept pic of Chief Bogo.  While the look may have changed, the ‘tude remains the same.

Day 2 -Photo
Mayor Lionheart’s photo op at the ZPD Academy graduation ceremony.  Though she’s barely visible in the picture, Judy’s here, too. (on Hizzoner’s left, with his paw on her shoulder.)

Day 3 – Farm
The Hopps Family Farm’s produce stand.  This one made it into the theaters; reverse the angle and you have the opening screenshot of the Jude-the-Dude sequence.

Day 4 – Ice
Where else, but Tundratown?

Day 5 – Rain
Where else but the Rainforest District?

Day 6 -Blueberry
I kind of cheated a little on this one; it’s not, strictly speaking, concept art.  But since it involves the efforts of not one but two of the artists that worked on the film, how could I say no?

Day 7 – Rodent
This once was easy; there’s tons of Zootopia concept art featuring rodents.  The model sheet below is one of the few aimed at developing their actual look for the film.

Day 8 – Bridge
And this one was even easier; if I were to include every piece of Zootopia concept art with bridge in the frame, this collection would be more than 100 images long.  However there was only ONE bridge in the movie connected to an emotional moment; it made the choice a slam-dunk.

Day 9 – Power
Methinks this one’s pretty much explains itself.  Notice the outfit on the leopard; it later evolved into Duke Weaselton’s get-up.

Day 11 – Bandages
This pic was a tough one to find, surprisingly so, considering all the Zootopia Outtake videos we’ve seen, where Nick’s done up in bandages, same as here.

Day 12 Parkour
THIS prompt on the other hand, turned out to be easier to accommodate than I expected.

Day 13 Carrot
Not all the Zootopia concept art revolves around characters and/or locations.  Some if it was aimed at the development of props to be used in the movie.  This cart, for instance, made a brief appearance in the Carrot Days Festival sequence.

Day 14 – Clue
Yep, when Judy learned the name and properties of this flower, it was the clue that led to the unravelling of the Savage Predator mystery

Day 15 – Cliffhanger
There are at least three scenes in Zootopia that fit the cliffhanger prompt–but only one that includes an actual cliff, and so…

Day 16 – Savage
Yes, yes…I know; I’m reaching a little here.  But ain’t it fun, watching Judy pretend to go savage?

Day 17 – Bone
Note the ‘bear anatomy’ wall-chart on Nick’s left.  This is another concept piece from Tame-Collar Zootopia

Day 20- Sport
A troupe of little bunnies, playing ball in the Hopps Family warren.  I hope we get to see more of this place in the sequel.

Day 21 – Fantasy
This one might require a little explanation.  It’s another concept pic from the Tame Collar version of the film; the sequence in which Nick has his collar removed for a medical exam and indulges in some fantasy.

Day 22- Chill
A very early concept pic, showing Nick relaxing in his Wild Times office.

Day 23 – Vigil
You’ll have to look closely to find ’em, but there’s Nick in the upper image, and Judy in the lower one, each of them keeping a close watch on what’s happening.

Day 24 – Hustle
The great Jumbo-Pop Swindle; fits in nicely with the Hustle prompt, don’tcha think?.

Bay 25 – Memory
From a flashback sequence in the ‘Tame Collar’ version of Zootopia, in which Nick recalls visiting the city with his dad when he was little.

Day 26 – Time
Concept pics of the clock used in the ‘Get Your Pawpsicles’ scene.  The one on the left made it into the film.

Day 28 – Read
Judy in the ZPD Call Center; another image from Tame Collar Zootopia.

Day 29 – Outback
And another minor stretch; there’s no actual concept art of Outback Island.  Here we have Officer McHorn, in the midst of a ‘discussion’ with one of its residents.

Day 30 – Star
If you don’t recognize this pic, you REALLY need to go watch Zootopia again.

And finally…
Day 31 – Ring
Like all good gangsters, Mr. Big wears his ring on his pinky finger.
