Special Art of the Day #284: RIP Stan Lee

And so, clutching his Rocket action figure, Little Nick settles down in front of the TV to watch his favorite Marvel Super Hero cartoons.

As almost everyone is aware of by now, Stan Lee, the brilliant editor and publisher of Marvel Comics passed away on Monday.

Stan was an innovator who brought new life to the Marvel Comics Group through such radical concepts (for a comic book) as witty dialogue and saddling his heroes and heroines with all too human foibles.  (In one of the the more memorable instances, he gave tony Stark [Iron Man] a drinking problem.)  As editor of the Marvel Comics Group, Mr. Lee frequently butted heads with his publisher, who thought many of his editor’s ideas too risky for the comics. (Lee had to fight tooth and nail even to get Spider-Man into the printing presses.) Later, when Mr. Lee took over as publisher himself, Marvel Comics entered its golden age.

Throughout his career, Stan Lee always clung to the dicta that the most important element in creating a good comic was to have good quality writing; great artwork was all very nice, but if you didn’t have story to hang it on, you might as well hang it up. That was his creed, not only for Marvel Comics, but also for Marvel Studios; good writing comes before anything else.

And so, in recognition of Mr. Lee’s passing we present a special collection of Zootopia X Marvel Super Heroes fanart.  (As always, don’t forget to show the original artists some love by clicking on the source links.)

Farewell Stan Lee, and thanks for all the hours of enjoyment you’ve given to me, and so many others.

EXCELSIOR!

Get your art after the break!

We begin with a series of images showing Nick and Judy as Captain America and Iron Man (Iron Fox?)

Ya gotta admit, when it comes to attitude, Nick and Tony Stark are totally on the same page.

No collection of Marvel Comics fanart would be complete without a few images dedicated to ‘The Merc With a Mouth’.

Give the popularity of the Spiderman comics, it’s surprising how little Zootopia X Spidey artwork is out there.

And now for something completely obscure; Gazelle in the fursona of Shiklah (aka Mrs. Deadpool.)

  1. Goodbye, True Believers. My cameos are finished, time for the feature event. See you in the comics.
    Excelsior,
    Stan Lee

  2. As well as Nick and Judy definitely fit with some of the characters personality-wise (Stark, Quill, Parker, Deadpool etc/Rogers, Gomora etc respectively) some of the others I don’t think I could ever agree with (Judy’s got too pure a heart to ever be Deadpool, or The Punisher). But the art of this crossover realm has always been among my favorites 🙂
The world’s definitely not gonna be quite the same without Lee around, but without doubt his fans will carry on his legacy.
