Welcome Zootopia fans! This is a very exciting time in our fandom with the impending release of the sequel to our favorite film. In order to celebrate the release of Zootopia 2 in theaters, we will be holding a fanfiction and art challenge called a minibang.
A minibang is a fanfiction challenge with a small word count requirement. For this challenge, the maximum word count will be 6,000 words. Authors will write a one shot fanfiction and an artist will illustrate a scene from the fanfiction which will also include the title of the fanfiction. It is a fun challenge to help produce more transformative works and allow for more collaboration within the fandom.
For this specific minibang we will be focusing on our takes on how the story will continue. Authors will each write a short fic that will take place after the events of the first film since we are celebrating the continuation of the story. The fic will be accompanied by a piece of artwork which includes the title of the fic. Each author will be randomly matched with an artist who will make an art piece to represent their fanfiction.
This challenge is spoiler friendly meaning that participants may use any information they obtain about the sequel to inspire their work. Please be mindful of this. This is a not-for- profit event. Moderators, authors, and artists will all be donating their time
Who is eligible to participate?
You must be at least 14 years old to participate as an author or artist. You do not need to have published fanfiction or art before to participate. Authors and artists with all levels of experience are welcome to participate. We look forward to having you!
Sign ups will be on a first come, first serve basis. Unfortunately, due to the small moderator team for the project, if there is a large turn out, not everyone who signs up may be able to participate. We hope that this will not be the case, but we will inform all those who sign up if they will be able to participate or not. We will also be asking for moderators. The more moderators we have, the more people will be able to participate in the project. In order to be a moderator of the project, you need to be at least 18 years old.

Requirements for Participating Authors 📝
- The minimum word count for your fanfiction will be 3,000 words and the maximum word count will be 6,000 words. Your fanfiction cannot go under 3,000 words and it cannot exceed 6,000 words. This challenge is for short fanfiction.
- You need an Archive of Our Own (Ao3) account.
- You can work with another author to write your fic. You will be considered co-authors. When you sign up, you will indicate who you will be working with. Both of you must fill out a form to sign up. Archive of Our Own (Ao3) allows for multiple authors.
- Your fanfiction must be written in English. If you would like to translate your fanfiction to another language, you can, but your submissions to us must be in English.
- Authors will submit a summary of their fanfiction and 1 draft of their work before it is posted. The summary will be submitted via a Google Form which will be available on the ZNN website. Your draft will also be submitted via Google Form which will be available on the ZNN website as well. You can copy and paste your work from whatever program you are using to write your fanfiction (Google Docs, Microsoft Word, Pages, etc) onto the Google Form. Please be mindful of the due dates. The Google Forms will be available for one week before the due dates to give you ample time to fill them out.
- Authors will also be required to complete a check-in via Google Form. On this check-in, you can also express any concerns that you may have. You can express if you are having a major issue with your partner there. It will be available on the ZNN website for one week as well.
- If you fail to complete the check-in and do not respond when we contact you afterwards, you will be dropped from the challenge.
- You cannot submit a fanfiction that you have posted prior. While your fanfiction can technically be a sequel to something you have written, you need to make sure that it is something that can stand alone on its own.
- All completed fics MUST be uploaded to Archive of Our Own (Ao3). You must have an Ao3 account to participate. A collection will be created on Ao3. We will create the collection. You can either upload the fanfiction to the collection yourself under the “Associations” section by typing in the name under “Post to Collections/Challenges.” The collection should appear and you will be able to add your fic. If you have difficulty with that, we will send you a request to add the fic to the collection. Due to concerns about AI, we will be allowing authors to choose to restrict their work to registered users only.
- There will be two rounds. When you sign up for the event, you will indicate which round you would like to sign up for, or if you are available for both. It will be on a first come, first serve basis. We will try to have an equal amount of fanfiction release in the first round and then in the second round. You have more of a chance of being selected for the challenge if you are available for both rounds.
- You may not commission another artist to make art for your fanfiction. This is a not-for-profit challenge. You will be working with the artist who you are paired with. You must contact your artist partner within 48 hours of being matched. If you do not hear from your partner within that time frame, please contact us immediately at [email protected].
- Ideally, you should start collaborating with the artist once you have started writing and submitted your summary.
- You may not upload your fanfiction for the challenge to any other fanfiction website (Ex: Fanfiction.net, Wattpad).
- You may speak with other authors, artists, and mods about your work for the challenge in the designated channel on the ZNN Discord Server. The moderators on the ZNN Discord Server will assign participants of the challenge a role, so that they can access the designated channel. Please refrain from posting previews of your fanfiction in other places besides for the designated channel. This includes on your various social media accounts. Your work has to be kept a secret from anyone not involved in the challenge until your work is posted.
Fanfiction Requirements 📖
- The fic may be rated for General Audiences or Teen and Up Audiences. Think about it this way—your fanfiction should, at maximum, be PG-13. All content in the fanfiction should reflect these ratings.
- The fanfiction must take place after the events of the first film which was released in 2016. It is up to you when it will take place. Some examples include a fic that takes place right after the Gazelle concert, or a fic that takes place 20 years in the future. You can also write something that takes place during the sequel. It is all up to you! We just ask that it does not take place during the original film. You may use spoilers, leaks, or actual material from the sequel fic to inspire your work.
- The fanfiction must center around canonical characters which means characters that exist already within the franchise. These characters can be from Zootopia, Zootopia+, and/or Zootopia 2. The exception to this will be Jack and Skye. Either or both of those characters can be the main characters of your fanfiction.
- Original characters (OCs) are allowed, but as stated above the fanfiction must center around a pre-existing character in the Zootopia universe.
- The fic can include romance if you would like. There is no requirement about ships. You can write about any ship you would like, or not include any ship at all. Just remember that a canonical character must be the focus of the fanfiction. Be mindful of the rating.
- The fic must be complete when you upload it to the collection. If you would like to create a series based on your fanfiction, you must do so separately. You will have to upload any sequel fanfiction as a separate work that is not part of the collection.
- If one of the main characters dies in your fic, you must use the Ao3 major archive warning for character death when you upload your fanfiction.
- It is highly recommended that you use a beta reader before you upload your completed fic. A beta reader can help you with several things such as characterization, grammar, and the overall pacing. It is not required, though. Sadly, we will not be able to assign you a beta reader, but you can try to connect with someone on the ZNN Discord server. Moderators will look at your drafts, when you submit them, but will not be able to beta read, due to our many responsibilities for the project.
Requirements for Participating Artists 🎨
- Each artist must create one piece of art to depict the fanfiction. (Creating more is optional, to be agreed with your author partner.)
- You must contact your writer partner within 48 hours of being matched. If you don’t hear from them, email [email protected] immediately.
- Your art must be an original illustration.
- Your art may be in any style or medium (digital or traditional).
- The final size and orientation are your choice.
- While you may get feedback from others, the artwork itself must be created by you.
- You may upload your art to the platform of your choice, but it must be embedded into the Ao3 collection under “Associations > Post to Collections/Challenges.”
- Artists must complete a check‑in via Google Form (available on the ZNN website for one week) to share any concerns, including partnership issues.
- If you fail to check in and don’t respond to follow‑up, you will be dropped from the challenge.
- Artists must submit one sketch via Google Form (available for one week before the due date).
- Moderators and ZNN staff will assist with embedding your art into the fanfiction if needed.
- You may be paired with an unfamiliar character or ship—that’s part of the challenge!
- Your published art should remain public for at least six months post‑challenge. If you later decide to disassociate, inform your author partner.
- If sign‑ups leave us short on artists, we’ll ask interested “pinch hitters” (from form responses) to take on extra projects. This is voluntary and not guaranteed.
Rules for all Participants 📜
- Treat fellow writers, artists, and mods with kindness and professionalism. Remember this is a collaborative project and we all love Zootopia.
- When working with your partner or speaking with other participants in the challenge, constructive feedback is welcome, but unkind, dismissive, or rude comments are not tolerated.
- Harassment of any kind (including based on race, gender, orientation, age, ability, or beliefs) will result in immediate removal from the challenge.
- Communicate clearly and respectfully with your partner, the moderators, and any other participants of the challenge.
- All fanfiction and artwork must be original and made by you.
- AI-generated writing or images are not allowed in this event. This is a celebration of your creativity.
- Moderators reserve the right to remove participants who break these rules.
- If you have general questions, there will be a forum on Discord for those; most FAQs are in the FAQ section. Specific or private concerns should be emailed to [email protected]. Please do not DM moderators on Discord.
- Do not post previews of your writing or artwork for the challenge on social media. You may share previews only in the designated ZNN Discord channel.
- Remember that you may be paired with someone unfamiliar with a particular character or ship—this is part of the challenge. Treat each other kindly and respectfully.
- All deadlines must be met. If you have an emergency, notify the moderator team as soon as possible at [email protected].
🛑 Important Notes:
- You may sign up for both roles (writer + artist), but you cannot make art for your own fanfiction or write for your own art; you’ll be matched with someone else.
- You cannot request a specific match—pairings are random to keep things fair for newcomers.
- In addition to the Ao3 collection, the ZNN team will feature all stories on the ZNN website.
Consequences for Violations:
- First offense: Warning from moderators
- Second offense: Removal from the event
- Severe behavior (e.g. harassment, hate speech): Immediate removal and potential ban from future events.

Frequently Asked Questions ❓
What is this minibang event?
This minibang event involves authors and artists collaborating to create transformative works for Zootopia. The work will all be posted during January 2026 during specific time frames. It is a minibang because all of the fanfiction will be between 3,000 and 6,000 words, and each artist is only required to produce one piece of art for each fic.
Who organized this event?
This event was developed by Atocha with the help of Cafe_Civet. It was approved by the ZNN team. Agent Exeider helped to create a platform on the ZNN site for the project. Cafe_Civet was the artist for the banner.
Who is the moderator team?
Atocha, Cafe_Civet, and Kora Cottontail are the current moderators for the project. Atocha and Cafe_Civet will also be participating in the project. AgentExeider will help manage ZNN site postings for the challenge and help with technological issues. We will add to this if/when we have more moderators.
I wanted to sign up, but I saw that registration was closed. Can I still participate?
Sadly, once we close registration, you will not be able to participate. The challenge is on a first-come, first-served basis. Once we have reached capacity, registration will close. This may be before the closing registration date given. This is being done so that the challenge will run smoothly.
I signed up early, but was not selected to participate. Why?
In the initial rules and information, it says that there is more of a chance for you to participate if you are available for both rounds. If you were not selected, this means that many people signed up before you. We will be looking at the time stamps to ensure that everything is done on a first-come, first-served basis. We may reach out to you if someone drops out and we need another artist or author, so you may still have a chance to participate. We will do our best to make sure that everyone has a fair chance to participate.
How will authors and artists collaborate?
Authors will be writing fanfiction that takes place sometime after the events of Zootopia (2016), and artists will create artwork depicting a scene from the fanfiction. Artists will include the title of the fanfiction on the art piece. Please remember that this is not a commission. The artist does not work for you. Authors and artists will work together to decide what should be illustrated from the fanfiction. Please be mindful that your artist may not feel comfortable drawing something that you initially suggest. This may result in the artist wanting to draw something from the fanfiction that may be different from what you were initially thinking of. This is okay. The artist can draw what they are most comfortable with as long as it depicts something from the fanfiction. Artists and authors cannot demand that each other do anything.
Artists and authors, who are paired together, will be given each other’s contact information. There must be open communication between you both. However, please remember that your partner has a life outside of the fandom and may be quite busy. Please give them time to answer, and do not contact moderators if you are not getting immediate responses. Please be patient with your partner. We are all fans of Zootopia, working towards a common goal. Authors should be providing frequent updates to their artists about their fanfiction to help them with creating the art piece for it. Do not speak about your partner’s writing or artwork without their permission on the designated challenge channel in the Discord server. Please only speak about your own work if you wish to. People’s art can be deeply personal to them.
What is a pinch hitter?
A pinch hitter is an artist who has expressed an interest in taking on another project, in case someone drops out, or if we have more authors than artists. However, pinch hitters are not obligated to take on extra projects.
Can my OC (Original character) be the main character in the fanfiction I write?
Your OC can play a part in your fanfiction, however, a requirement for the challenge is that a pre-existing canonical character is the focus. The exceptions to this are Jack and Skye. Moderators will ask you to make changes to your fanfiction if your OC is the main character.
What do I do if I do not hear from my partner within 48 hours of being matched?
If you do not hear from your partner within 48 hours of being matched, please email moderators right away at [email protected].
I am having issues with my partner, what do I do?
Please remember that you and your partner may have different headcanons or ideas about Zootopia itself. This is not a cause for new partners. We encourage you to embrace the different viewpoints and work together. The goal of this project is to show how we, as a fandom, regardless of our ships, favorite characters, and opinions, can work together to create amazing transformative works in honor of our favorite film. Part of the challenge is working with someone who may draw or write content about different ships or characters than you normally do. If your partner is not responding at all to you and is not doing their part of the project, after you have tried resolving it on your own, you can email [email protected]. Please do not DM moderators on Discord or any other social media platform. We will redirect you to our email address. However, we ask that you try to resolve any issues on your own at first. You will also be able to express any concerns you are having in general, including if there is one with your partner, on the Google Form check-in that you will be required to complete.
Where can I discuss my fic and artwork?
Before your round of posting begins, you will only be able to discuss your fic and/or artwork on the designated Discord server channel on ZNN. Part of the fun of this challenge is that our work will remain secret from the general public until the challenge has ended. Once your fic is posted, you can discuss it anywhere and promote it anywhere that you would like.
I have an emergency and I need to drop out. What do I do?
We do understand that emergencies happen. We ask that you be considerate of your partner and other participants in the project since dropping out involves asking others to take your place. However, if you truly cannot be a part of the challenge anymore, please let us know immediately via email at [email protected].
What happens if I need an extension?
Generally, we will not be granting extensions unless there is an extreme emergency. You will have to contact us at [email protected] if an absolute emergency has occurred. You will be dropped from the challenge if your summary or rough draft is not submitted on time and an extension has not been granted to you. There will be no extensions for your final product. Each participant has 6 days to post their work during the allotted time slot for their round.
Work for the project begins before the release of the film, I am worried about spoilers and leaks. How will this be handled?
This is a spoiler friendly challenge meaning that people can use spoilers or even leaks to inspire their writing for the challenge. Drafts and the final products will be submitted after the release of the film, however, summaries will be due at the beginning of November. Therefore, your fellow challenge participants may be discussing their work which may be inspired by spoilers, leaks, and the sequel itself. As an artist, you may be asked to draw a scene by your partner from a fic that was inspired by a spoiler. If you are very worried about spoilers then this challenge may not be for you.
What happens if I want to change what I am writing about?
The latest you would be able to change what you are writing about would be during the check which will occur in late November. Remember drafts are due in late December and you have to be considerate of your artist partner’s time as well as the moderators of the project’s time. Should you feel that you would really like to change your story, let us know via email as soon as possible at [email protected]. We will not accept changes to your story after your check in date has passed.
Can I write a fic set in an alternate universe?
Technically, you can as long as the events of the first movie have occurred. For example, if you’d like to write that a zombie apocalypse is now happening, you can do that. You can get as creative as you’d like for your ideas of what comes next after the original film.
Can I write a crossover fic?
For this specific challenge, you may not write a crossover fic. The fanfiction must center around characters that are already in the Zootopia franchise. We are also asking you to avoid including characters from other franchises.
