Success is one of those things people often see as a double-edged sword. If one sees too much of it, then they may become complacent and not improve on an original idea, product, or design. This might result in a long-term drying out of said product. This might mean people move on from the product and look for something new and exciting. On the other edge of the sword, one may become overconfident and think they can repeat the same success again. Sometimes this plans out the way one plans, but often it doesn’t. But when it comes to something new, you are also playing with a different type of risk. There are new franchises that take off and blast into the heights of the cultural zeitgeist, or perhaps they become more niche cult classics. Both are possibilities, and where one ends up is not always in the control of the creator and their supporting team, though they certainly play a part in it. But just how does one thread the needle of introducing a new franchise?
Much can be said about Zootopia and how it approached just this topic. When Zootopia first came out, very few knew what to expect. Sure, it had the promotional and marketing material, but those can only tell you so much. How many knew what to expect going in? Leaks were certainly a thing, but from what we know, the original plot was mostly scrapped for what we know today. But as many in the fandom can attest; memorable characters, a good story, high-quality voice acting, a realistic setting, and relatable undertones all serve to make the film one that one will like. Recently, DazzReviews offered his own insight on the topic. Going into why he thinks this was the first Disney success in what he considered of the same quality. So check out the full take below and let us know in the comments why you think Zootopia was such a succesful franchise in the comments below!
