Hey all! Civet here to break down this first week of Zootopia 2!

So I’m a big box office person. I love movies in general, and it’s one of the many reasons I love the Zootopia movies. I track box office numbers, compare how movies are doing versus similar movies, and even use box office numbers as a game.

So, let’s take a look at some of these numbers, see what it means, and talk about why it did as well as it did (other than the fact that it’s just a straight-up amazing movie!)

Zootopia 2 made $156M domestically this weekend and grossed $556M worldwide.

This seems to be the largest worldwide Thanksgiving weekend ever, and the 4th largest worldwide opening ever, only beaten by Spider-Man: No Way Home, Infinity War, and Endgame.

Since overall reaction has been extremely positive, even outside the fandom, its legs will probably be pretty large. Looking forward, it will almost certainly cross the 1 billion mark, meaning it could very possibly take a top 3 animated movie spot, with the possibility of taking the number 1 spot (although that would be tough), and it is very possible it will land in the top 10 highest-grossing movies (not animated, just movies) ever made.

A huge reason for the success is the Asian market, and specifically the marketing efforts and the way the movie is viewed in China, with Disney even holding a special premiere event in the Zootopia-themed land in Shanghai. Zootopia 2 also received a 9.7 on Maoyan, the Chinese platform with a large presence in online ticketing for movies, and an 8.6 on Douban, a social networking and content rating platform for discussing films, books, and other media.

China has a special connection to Zootopia, with the first movie doing so well that Disney actually extended its theatrical release by an additional week because of demand for it! In addition, the marketing for Zootopia 2 has been fantastic everywhere, but especially in Asia, with collabs with Starbucks, Miniso, Pop Mart, Uniqlo, displays in malls and public places, and yes, even Scrub Daddy.

I will continue to monitor the box office, but I think it’s incredibly apparent that this is one of Disney’s most successful IPs they have ever made. I would expect to see more merch, more integration into the parks, and we have pretty much been told a third movie is planned (although nothing has been officially announced).

Until then, stay tuned and stay classy, Zootopia!
