Story: A Fox’s Game

There was always going to be a final fic review of the Pre-Zoot 2 era, and when choosing which fic gets to have that honor I felt that Confused Goatee’s newest fic was well worth having the title.

The latest installment in the massive Hard Knock City saga, which all started not long after first film came out with the introduction of the city’s first weasel cop, is a welcome entry in a massive series that has involved some of the fandom’s biggest romance fics and some dark and angsty epics and one-shot collections (as well as lots of really dark but excellently written fics we couldn’t showcase). And, while this fic includes many of those features, it also features something very unique for a Goatee fic, a Nick-centric POV! (Amongst others).

With a measured but well written look into the first fox cop, as well as an angst riddled first weasel cop and a whole bunch of other mammals, this fic looks back at much old lore of the series as dark pasts and memories rise up from the mud, all wrapped up in an accusation and criminal cases that hurt all the more given the great groundwork done to flesh out both Duke and the members of his family on both sides of the law. With character writing and the conflicts that shine through, it only means the dark and brutal ghosts of the past haunting the fic are all the more intense, and the story all the more enticing for those following it.
