Disney hints at Nick and Judy being more than friends!

Rich Moore is one sly son of a gun, isn’t he?  Wreck-it-Ralph messed with a lot of Disney conventions, including having SIDE characters (if you can call them that) getting married, with no romantic focus involved in the main character’s story whatsoever.  But there are some pairings in Disney that are too good to ignore, like a certain fox and bunny.

This tweet, which hints at there being something… more… between Nick and Judy, came to us from a live-tweeting event where Rich Moore was briefly given control of the @DisneyAnimation twitter account while Wreck It Ralph played on ABC.  Of course, being the notorious WildeHopps shipper he is, he couldn’t let this chance to tease us pass, could he?

Side note- Rich may be one of the directors of Zootopia, but that doesn’t necessarily mean WildeHopps is considered Canon.  Canon is just the movie, not anything outside of it.  However, Disney has been dropping hints about it left, right, and center for the past two years so… take that as you will.

You can see the rest of the live-tweeting over on twitter by searching for the hashtag #RalphWithRich, and react to/retweet the original post after the break!

  1. I wonder if the only reason we haven't heard about a Zootopia 2 by now is that Disney simply can't decide whether to put those two together or not. I'm a shipper myself, but both sides have good arguments, you gotta give it that.

    • I wonder too, wish they would've picked this up as much as they did frozen and cars… it's so sad that they let the potential of this franchise slip away because they don't know what to do with it while I have hundreds of possible cute animal merch ideas. Just look at the NICI animal plush and gift series. Zoot merch could easily compete with it if they would try.

However I can't agree with that both shipper and anit-shipper sides have good points. Those who don't want Nick and Judy to come together have small-minded or superficial reasonings that disregard all their character traits and even the whole lesson of the first movie like "They are different species, it's unnatural"… well boys, it's not like the first film wasn't all about how these kinda prejudice opinions are wrong or anything. Those who care so little about the character's personality and journey should decide whenever there should be allowed to fall in love? I don't think so.

    • I think Disney knows just how strong the fan base is and after realizing their mistake with not giving the film the possibility for success they are probably making sure Bryan has the support he needs to make a good sequel. Even though they are probably on board of having nick and judy become a couple they dont want to lose the tone of the first film without having a deep tone. Maybe a new fear of getting over the stigmatism of interspecies dating? Also the tone of the film has to be right to make sure parents won't freak out too much about it becoming a love story between two different animals.

  2. I pair the two of them, but would be just fine if they remained friends, so long as something came about following Zootopia…beyond a romance that many of us hope for there's too much to explore in this universe to let only that one detail hang up so much storytelling possibility.

  3. I am fine with either road. Let them be friends or something more and this is why. For one, I ship WildeHopps because they are perfect for each other. I admit, it took me a year and reading fan fiction to see it. However, there is another reason why people probably don't ship it. There is the cliche where these kinds of duos get together at the end and to have Judy and Nick fall into this cliche just adds into the list of Disney movies that fall into this cliche. However, they have great chemistry so it wouldn't be forced, which is why I also ship them.
Besides, this should not be another reason why we do not have any news for a sequel. Maybe Disney can make Zootopia 2 about another case and then make another sequel afterwards pairing the dynamic duo if they can't make up their minds by then.
Keep in mind that Goldman's case has just been reopened, which can also affect the announcement for Zootopia 2. In the end, I just hope we get what we want: a sequel!

    • The 1st Goldman lawsuit (about IP infringement) hasn't been "reopened", actually. Especially since the judge had decided that the suit may not be amended.

Goldman's 2nd lawsuit was more towards "breach of contract", and usually doesn't lead to injunction.

    • The cliche is one reason. There are, however, several other points (I will stick with two for now) worth bringing up.

One is that it can be strongly argued that Nick becoming a police officer – and particularly Judy's partner – was the culmination of all the movie's moral victories. However, according to every police officer to whom I have spoken on the matter, very few police departments allow dating within a precinct; at the very least they would have to be in different districts. This is done for numerous ethical and professional reasons, all of which would be completely thrown out the window if they had actual partners dating. Ergo, to have Nick and Judy end up as a couple would either be profoundly unrealistic or require one or both of them to transfer, resign, or be fired. You could not ask for a worse sequel.

Secondly, as you say they have good chemistry. That chemistry, however, could be done just as well – and better in some ways – with them as just friends or even if one of them started dating someone else. You can, for example, get away with some teasing about someone else's love life which would border on or be downright abusive if you were the one dating them. There are even inklings of that in the first movie (e.g. "Does this make you uncomfortable?"), albeit applied to other contexts. Also, I think there is a dirth of dynamics out there where a partner steps in during a rough patch in a friend's relationship and says something like, "Look, I know this isn't what you had in mind (what relationship never hits that bump?), but it's going to be worth the trouble. Trust me on this."

Those are just a couple of points, but something to think about.
