ZNN Anniversary Interview! The Staff Shows it's Stuff!

It's been one year since ZNN started. And in that time period a team has been built. That team has come together to think of new ideas, build friendships and trust, start new projects and finish the old, and just all around grow into what it is today! This is Fonzi here, and I'm bringing you an inside look at the first 6 members to join ZNN, as well as a few from each of our separate departments.

Check out the interviews after the break!

You read that title right!  ZNN managed to get an exclusive interview with Byron Howard in honor of our One-Year Anniversary!  Before we begin, I have to give a huge thank you to Byron for taking some of his time to answer our questions!  We asked them to Rich Moore as well, but he is super busy Breaking the Internet.  Keep up the awesome work, Rich!  We're all looking forward to it!

This interview was conducted via email, so we have full, written responses for your enjoyment!  We ask about his reactions to Zootopia's whirlwind success, what's surprised him, and even some worldbuilding trivia you all want to know!

Check out the FULL INTERVIEW after the break!

Celebrate ZNN's One-Year Anniversary with us!

Featuring (from left to right):
Moonwolf, Tomlocke, Andy Lagopus, Nota, and Shadow (Dominic Faux)
On March 31st, 2016, ZNN officially launched.  I didn't expect too much.  I thought it would go the way of most of the other things I had been involved in up to that point- good for a few weeks, then slowly fade into obscurity.

Today, One year later, we have 3.2 Million pageviews, thousands of loyal fans, and opportunities I could have never imagined.

I've said it before and I'll say it again:  Thank you so, so much!  None of this would be possible if it weren't for you and your constant support!

So, I hope you don't mind a day with some self-indulgence; that is the purpose of Birthdays, after all.  We have some very special articles in mind for you today, so without further ado, let the celebration begin!

To kick the party off, let's go on a trip down memory lane to the very first articles ever published on ZNN!

Let's have another wonderful year, everyone!  As always, remember...

Try Everything!

[Mead] Judy is Dead: The Bridge

It's been a long time since the last one, but today we're finally continuing the Judy is Dead by the well known MisterMead. Today, we'll be showing off the next two chapters in the story: The Bridge Part 1 and Part 2.

History doesn't repeat itself, but it does rhyme. In the next part of the MisterMead's Judy is Dead, an all too familiar scene plays out again between Nick and July.

Story: Pastoral

Art: Zootopia-Judy Hopps
[Rating T13][Hurt/Comfort][Romance][Angst][Complete]

Enthralling and handling its angst with a deft touch, this is the kind of emotional story that sticks with you long after reading it. We all know Judy as the optimistic little bunny who has a positive outlook on life and endeavors to help her fair city in any way she can. After a harrowing experience, however, her ideals and faith in Zootopia are tarnished, kicking off a series of events that forces her back to Bunnyburrow. One of the early greats in the fandom, you'll no doubt be immersed into this story as you follow Judy and Nick on an epic journey of loss, catharsis, and redemption. - DrummerMax64

Author: brodayhey
Description : Judy Hopps joined the Zootopia Police Department to make the world a better place. This is easier said than done. Two years after cracking Dawn Bellwether's plot, Judy encounters a series of murders which make her childhood dream seem impossible. Crushed by the contents of the case, it will take a change of scenery to help her become whole again.

Comic: The Violet Diaries Part 2 (Original by skeletonguys-and-ragdolls)

Hey there, Dominic faux here!

Today we're revisiting the comic The Violet Diaries by skeletonguys-and-ragdolls. Last time on this comic, Judy was pregnant! If you haven't read that one, check it out right over here!

Keeping the trend of adorable, this comic is based off the 3rd chapter of the fanfic The Violet Diaries by HelTheHatter. Well, without spoiling a lot of the comic, read on to see a cute little story about baking a cake.

Feel free to check the comic out over on Tumblr, or just after the break!

Learn to Draw Judy Hopps with an official Disney Artist!

For the past few months, the official Disney Youtube Channel has been hosting a semi-regular livestream where an artist from Disney Publishing shows you how how to draw like a Disney pro!  Called "Quick Draw", this series is a chance for Disney fans to ask questions and interact with a member of the Disney staff.  He talks about different drawing techniques, and has several tips for those learning art and animation.

It was only a matter of time before they did a Zootopia themed stream, so naturally Judy is the rabbit of the hour!

Comic: Confession, Chapter 5 (Original by Peanut.K)

And now, PeanutK's "Confession" series starts to get serious.  Nick and Judy finally organize what might be considered a date when tragedy strikes.  What will happen?  Only time (and the next part of the comic, which we will cover soon) can tell.

You can find our coverage of the first 4 parts here:

Check out the comic over on PeanutK's tumblr, or after the break!

Audiobook: The Chronicles of Zootopia (read by Sean Dalglish)

It's one thing to read a fanfic yourself.  It's another to hear it read in a magnificent Scottish accent!

Read by Sean Dalglish and edited by Gordon Breuer, this series of videos takes the "Chronicles of Zootopia" series, by Laverne, and gives them the full audio treatment!  Including some basic background music (most of which we've featured here individually), this is the sort of thing that is great if, like me, you're often very busy and only have a few minutes here and there to listen to a story.

As a fellow voice actor, I must say, Sean's accent is just the best.  And while the audio quality isn't perfect in the first few episodes, it improves steadily as they get further and further into it.  Excellent work all around!  Making audiobooks isn't as easy as it sounds, so these guys definitely deserve kudos for it!

Check out the first eight chapters after the break, and be sure to subscribe to their youtube channel, "Zootopia Fan" for updates and new chapters!

Story: Wilde's Card

Art: TheWyvernsWeaver
[Rating T13][Mystery][Drama][AU]

An alternate universe that immediately pulls you in and refuses to let go. Fascinating and guileful, this is another take on Nick and Judy solving the Missing Mammals case, but with one key change: Nick is already a detective in the department. Not only that, but this version of him is much more devious and manipulative, which results in a very different kind of dynamic between these two. With both an intriguing premise and a superb set-up, this is a story with great promise that indicates some interesting developments further down the line. - DrummerMax64

Author: Flipside Remix
Description : "Red paws a'knocking, honeyed words a'talking. Bunny's in the sack, a knife in her back. Shut the doors and check the locks. Here comes the big bad fox." - An old rabbit nursery rhyme.

Comic: WildeHopps Civil War AU [PART 6] (By ProgressOfTomorrow)

Dominic Faux here,

Today, our good friend Andy Lagopus is on vacation, so the posts have been taken care by me, with some help from a few of our great ZNN team.

With another month come and gone, I think it's time for another episode of the Civil War AU comic by ProgressOfTomorrow. It's been just a little while since the last episode, so if you need to catch back up here's Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, and Part 5.

After all that's happened, what will become of this duo? Or will they even be a duo anymore? The war was a hard time for many, and it still seems to linger in the hearts of those who suffered in it.

Comic: Fairly Odd Zootopia, Part 3 (by FairyTalesArtist)

(Art and comic by FairytaleArtist)

Talented illustrator and ZNN member FairytalesArtist has released another part of his unique crossover comic, Fairly Odd Zootopia! Believe it or not, there is a Spanish Stop-motion Zootopia Series! (by RobertMan)

Here's a little treat for all of our fans in Latin America!  A Spanish Stop-motion Series!  Try saying that five times fast!

This is a style of video I haven't seen before.  It feels a bit like the beginning of Toy Story, where the toys are the characters in a big adventure.  Not only did they take the time to do stop-motion animation (for well over 20 minutes each), they voice acted the entire thing!  That takes a lot of time and dedication.

And yes, Captain America is in it.

Right now, there are two episodes released: El Caso Del Tema De Gacela (The case of Gazelle's Theme) and ¿Que Dice Nick? (What does the Nick Say?).  Both are definitely deserving of some love.  Kudos to you, RobertMan!  This is seriously impressive, and I look forward to seeing more!

Check them out after the break!

Story: Stranger at Home

Art: Jake Kim
[Rating K9][Family][Romance][Slice of Life][Complete]

A brilliant interpretation of Nick and Judy heading back to her hometown so that she can introduce her boyfriend to her loving, albeit overprotective, parents. While there, they have to deal with her rambunctious siblings, an apprehensive Stu, and a small incident that gets blown way out of proportion. Pleasant and sincere, this is a nice story that functions as an absorbing family drama, and is the latest entry in TheRealFanboy's enjoyable Parts of a Family series. -DrummerMax64

Author: TheRealFanboy
Description : Finally, Judy wants to introduce Nick to her family and show him her home town. It is their first vacation together, so they decide to spend it on the Hopps Family Farm. Yet the surprise is bigger than she had hoped for.

Poll Results: What are your favorite scenes from Zootopia?

Source: Imanika
The fandom voted The Bridge the best scene in the movie!  And in other news, the sky is still blue!

Okay, I will admit that I basically used the scene titles as found on the DVD.  If I could sort the movie line by line, story beat by story beat, the choices would have taken up the entire sidebar.  So a few really great scenes were sort of mixed together.  For example, "Felony Tax Evasion" (depending on your interpretation) includes Judy's chase through Little Rodentia, getting chewed out by Bogo, and recruiting Nick.

That said, there were a few scenes that were clearly preferred.  Try Everything, "Sly Fox, Dumb Bunny", "Felony Tax Evasion", the Gondola, and the Epilogue are all great character developing scenes, so it doesn't really surprise me that they did so well.

Check out the full results after the break, and leave a comment down below if you think we missed something!

Comic: Tanabata (Original by Suzuri)

Tanabata is a traditional holiday in Japan, celebrating the meeting of the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi. People write wishes on strips of paper and hang them on bamboo plants. It's also an unofficial Valentine's Day in Japan, and Nick and Judy are there to celebrate both of these traditions!

Thanks to Suzuri for making the original comic (and this is not a sad comic, we promise!), and to LMAbacus for translating and editing it!  Check out the original over on Pixiv, and the translated version after the break!  As usual for translated comics, read from right to left!

Story: Change Starts With You

Art: kungfufreak07
[Rating T13][Crime][Hurt][Comfort]

I've read a number of stories involving Nick facing the ghosts of his past (and written one), but this is one of the more unique takes on the concept that I've seen. Nick's inner turmoil over his new assignment is a heck of an interesting read, and there's a surprising amount of depth given to both his backstory and that of the ZPD itself. A good concept, executed even better. -Berserker88

Author: Winerp
Description : 3 years after the events of the movie, Nick Wilde feels like he's finally free from his past life. A new threat, however, forces him to once again subject himself to undeserved hatred and scorn. Only this time he won't be alone, as a brave bunny stands with him and against whatever may come. Disney is being SUED over Zootopia!!!

Ace Attorney Style "OBJECTION!", with members of ZNN, drawn and colored by Sendrax and Quirky-Middle-Child
Yes, you read that title right.  Disney is being sued for allegedly copying the work of Gary Goldman, the writer of such hits as Total Recall and Big Trouble in Little China, and turning it into the Zootopia we know and love.  Esplanade Productions Inc., the company which represents Goldman, filed the lawsuit to the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California this morning.

An official Disney Spokesman responded to the lawsuit, saying:
Mr. Goldman's lawsuit is riddled with patently false allegations.  It is an unprincipled attempt to lay claim to a successful film he didn't create, and we will vigorously defend against it in court.
Well, Disney has the lawyers to defend Zootopia in court, but ZNN is here to defend it on the internet!  You can find the article in The Hollywood Reporter that brought this matter to our attention here, and you can read the full legal complaint here.  The real meat of the case begins on Page 9, titled "Factual Background".

At the moment, we don't know if the U.S. District Court will actually take this case or throw it out, but in my opinion it's unlikely to get very far.  Why?  I'll explain after the break.

Comic: The Violet Diaries (Original by skeletonguys-and-ragdolls)

Introducing the polar opposite of Judy is Dead- Judy is Pregnant!  If you ever needed a comic to claim your daily dose of "D'awwwwww!!!!" then this one is for you!

This adorable comic comes to us from Skeletonguys-and-Ragdolls over on Tumblr, and is based on the fanfic "The Violet Diaries" by HelTheHatter.  Both are absolutely fantastic, telling the story of Nick and Judy's first child, Violet, and how the two adapt to life with a kid.  It's heartwarming and sweet, with a good amount of humor thrown in.  I can't recommend it more!

Art of the Day #93: Color Me Impressed!

Zootopia by Saliov
Source [1]
Something that always impressed me about Zootopia was its excellent use of color. It is without a doubt the brightest, most colorful metropolis I've ever seen- and I've lived in some very beautiful cities.

The obvious love of color that permeates the film seems to be contageous. So today, we have a small sample of some phenomenally colored pieces of fanart. And I'm not talking about just bright colors either- sometimes the right colors in the right place can produce some truly stunning art.

The ZNN Writer's Corner: The Elements of an Action Scene (by DarkFlameWolf)

Artist: Alexbee1236
Hello my fellow fanfic writers! This is DarkFlameWolf, leader of the ZNN Abyss Gazers, here with an interesting new type of article. You see, there are so many tutorials out there for drawing art or making videos, but few really for helping others write.  So, I've put this together in the hope that we can all learn from each other and bring even more fantastic fanfiction into this fandom!

The question I see or get asked most is, "How do you plan out your action scenes?" Well, that is an excellent question and that varies from author to author.  However, I'll give you my particular method of sequence blocking that's helped me. This is not the only technique out there, but for those struggling to write action set pieces, maybe this will help you better.

For the purposes of this exercise, I will be using the bat chase scene from chapter 10 of my story Death Becomes You, (a fanfic we cannot properly feature or link here due to some of its content) BUT, the action scene contained here is a PERFECT example of the type of sequence blocking I will be discussing. I'll be editing out most of the gory bits to keep it PG for our readers here.

Without further adieu, check out my tutorial on crafting an action scene after the break!

Perfect Strangers Try Love (by Mashin' Jams)

Just how many songs can you combine with Try Everything to get something awesome?  Mashin' Jams seems to be on a quest to answer that question, and I wholeheartedly approve of it!

Combining the music of Jonas Blue's "Perfect Strangers" and Maroon 5's "Love Somebody" with Try Everything, this is a tune that I find myself just... jamming to.  It's soothing, yet I can also see it being played in a club.

Comic Dub: Night Terrors (by Scribbler Productions) (Original by Rick Griffin)

A long time ago  (Geez, it's been almost a year...) we covered the comic "Night Terrors", by Rick Griffin.  Then, back in January, ObabScribbler (aka Scribbler Productions) released a dub of this comic.  Keeping the level of quality she is known for in her dubs (such as "Try Everything" ), Scribbler brings us a top-notch performance!

Story: A Rabbit Clan's Fox

Art: Red Velvet Panda
[Rating T13][Adventure][Friendship][AU][Complete]

This is unquestionably a marvelous tale featuring our fox and rabbit in a Bronze Age AU, when mammals were still learning how to act civilly toward one another and society as a whole was just starting to flourish. A startling turn of events has Nick ending up as Judy's thrall for Clan Hopps, and they have to discover how this will change their destinies forever. With a remarkable attention to detail about their cultures and the various happenings in their daily lives, this amazing story will captivate you from start to finish, with a sequel potentially looming on the horizon. - DrummerMax64

Author: Boney_M
Description : The relative harmony of Zootopia is still millennia away. The bronze age is a time of constant conflict, not only between species, but within them. In this age of xenophobia, perhaps bridges could still be built between rabbits and foxes. Or at least between one specific rabbit, and one specific fox.

The confusing success of Zootopia - An editorial by Surrika Tunnah

Hello there mammals, great and small! Surrika Tunnah here with an article that is a bit different than usual.  Yes, I am going to talk about Zootopia, but more about how its success has baffled me to no end.

Everyone on this site and those that follow this fandom closely will know that Zootopia was a gigantic success and beat many of the odds to just even see the light of release.  Zootopia went through literally production hell. Re-write after re-write, threatened to be cancelled out-right and even have several complete story overhauls that changed and even deleted a ton of characters! It went through so many changes that even the art-book shows us the movies it could of been.

It deserves every bit of praise we shovel onto it, from its 1 billion dollar worldwide box office gross, to it's 24 amazing awards.  Not only because it's a great movie ,with a very good lesson on underlying racism and prejudice, but because it is literally a underdog story when it comes to movie production.

But it still doesn't feel like a success.  At least not to me.

Let me explain, after the break.

FreezeFrame #5- You're Dead, Fluff-butt!

Alright cadets, listen up!  The voice of Fuschia! (that's how she's credited, exclamation point and all) is here to train you how to be an officer on the ZPD!  You're going to have to master the elements, and in the process, you are going to run into all sorts of dangerous exercises!

Through it all, you will fail over and over and over again!  Especially you, bunny!
Yeah, I'm talking to you!  You're gonna get your butt kicked, and we're going to laugh!  Welcome to the ZPD, enjoy your career!

Try Everything performed by Elementary School Kids!

It's always awesome to see schools take creative approaches to get kids excited about music.

Take this teacher at the Sekolah Musik School in Indonesia!  Rather than forcing these elementary schoolers to play classical songs that always get played (looking at you, Pachelbel...), this class is taking a more modern approach to music.  One that involves learning how recording and musical performance works in a modern setting, outside of a concert hall.

Excellent work, Ms. Inka!  Your class did a wonderful job on this cover, and I can see from the video that they had fun doing so!  Keep it up, and one day they may have their own music featured in a Disney movie!

Poll: What are your favorite scenes from the movie?

Source- NeighborStudios
We haven't done a poll in a while, have we?  Let's fix that.

Zootopia is a phenomenal movie, but no movie is greater than the sum of its scenes.  That said, there are so many stand-out scenes that picking a favorite has always been kind of tricky for me.

Let's find out which scene is the fandom's favorite!  Will it be The Jumbo Pop Hustle?  The Press Conference?  The Bridge?  Taking down Bellwether?  There are so many options!

So, What are your favorite scenes from Zootopia?  Select as many as you want, but try to limit yourself to just your ABSOLUTE favorite scenes.

Check out the poll over in the sidebar, and we'll see you next week with the results!

Story: Integrity, Trust, and Bravery

Art: Ziegelzeig
[Rating T13][Drama][Crime][Thriller]

Hard-hitting and resolute, this work delivers some compelling drama and intertwines it with an intriguing plot that'll drag our duo into the dark bowels of the city. When Nick and Judy's world is thrown into disarray, they have to rely on each other and friends old and new in order to root out police corruption that is afflicting a district we didn't have a chance to see in the movie. Riveting and emotional, this outstanding story pushes our heroes to their breaking points. - DrummerMax64

Sunderance [Chapters 7 and 8] (By TheWyvernsWeaver and Kulkum)

If you thought Bogo was harsh on Judy in the movie... Well, let's just say Judy being on the opposite side of a major, politically-charged case involving corruption at the ZPD is leagues beyond that.

All the same, Kulkum and TheWyvernsWeaver back with two more absolutely EPIC chapters of Sunderance.  We see Judy verbally spar with Bogo, we see the softer side of Lionheart, and the conspiracy grows.  What is really going on in this version of Zootopia?  Only time will tell.

Find the new chapters of Kulkum's fanfic over on Archive of our Own:

Study Zootopia at the University of Tennessee!

Did you ever think that you would see Zootopia as a required part of a university course?  I mean, it deserves to be studied by every film student, but I'm talking outside of media arts class.  I'm talking...  Ethics.

Meet Trevor Hedberg, a graduate student in the Philosophy department at the University of Tennessee.  He is currently teaching a course called Contemporary Moral Problems, with a unit on the topic of how various psychological phenomena can cause us to unwittingly act unethically.  As a part of this course, he is screening Zootopia for his students as an introduction to their textbooks on the subject of implicit bias (as seen above).

As a part of his job, he's put together a relatively short paper titled "Moral Psychology and Prejudice in Disney's Zootopia".  This paper gives a brief explanation of the deeper issues at play in the movie, demonstrating how its message is not a direct allegory to any one race, gender, sexuality, etc., but how it serves as a lesson in recognizing and overcoming prejudice in all forms, regardless of the specific circumstances.  It goes beyond just a simple "Racism is bad!" message, and tackles the hard questions of implicit bias and how it affects decisions made by people who are fundamentally good.

You can read his paper here.  Not only is it fascinating in its current state, but he has opened it up to critique from the fandom at large.  That's right, he wants to hear what YOU have to say about his paper!  As he put it, "They are probably in a better position to critique it than most of my peers in academic philosophy, who have probably only seen the film once or twice."

The goal here is to point out details in the film that a casual observer might not notice, which tie in to understanding implicit bias.  For example, the scene at Jerry Jumbeaux Jr's Ice Cream Parlor is riddled with Microagressions, both from Jerry the elephant AND from Judy herself- and she didn't even realize!

So, if you've read the paper and think there was something important that he left out, or otherwise missed, leave a comment down below!

Try Everything RAP REMIX (by Kast Away)

And now for something very different:  An EDM/Rap Remix of Try Everything, recorded in a room with very appropriate decorations!

This comes to us from Kast Away, a relatively new musician on Youtube who is starting to make some waves with his excellent remixes of classic Disney songs, from Hercules and Mulan to Tangled and Moana.  His energy and enthusiasm while performing is top-notch, making his videos enjoyable to watch, even if you're not a big fan of electronic remixes!  I highly recommend it!

Comic: Samurai Jack Savage (by RobertFiddler)

Gotta get back, back to the past, Samurai Jack (jack jack- jack jack jack)
After 13 long years... JACK. IS. BACK!!!

I'm certain I'm not the only animation nut who went crazy over the news that Samurai Jack was returning, and on Adult Swim, where it can show the blood that always used to be oil.  This show is awesome.  And tonight, at 11 PM Eastern, the Samurai returns to once again face Aku and his minions.

I'm so excited!!!

So, let's all go back to the past together with this comic by RobertFiddler, where Jack is Savage, Nick's a Scotsman, and Judy his formidable wife.

ZMV: Memoir of Zootopia (by ACRaceBest) + video of last week's meetup at Randy's Donuts!

ACRacebest, as well as anyone else who got to go meet Rich Moore and Nate Torrence last Saturday, is one lucky son-of-a-gun.  He got to win prizes, chat with Clawhauser, ask Clark Spencer some questions, and even hug Rich Moore!

But that's not the only thing he did to commemorate Zootopia's one-year anniversary.  He also made a very high quality ZMV!

Titled Memoir of Zootopia, it's actually a part of a series where he recaps seasons of a TV show, in order, in a music video.  If you're wondering why it was called that, well, now you know!  Trust me, it confused me too, I asked him directly.

Also, sorry that this post is coming to you guys so late in the day!  I've been really busy putting the finishing touches on the Ultimate Thank You Card project.  That's right!  Expect an update about that very soon!

So, check out Memoir of Zootopia, as well as a video of Race's experience at the Meet-and-greet event last week, after the break!

Comic: Oscar Ceremony (Original by Nene Mitsuharu)

Congratulations again to Zootopia winning Best Animated Feature! Possibly the only thing better would've been if Nick and Judy went to receive the award themselves, a la the 2001 Best Animated Picture award ceremony!

Thanks to Nene Mitsuharu for making the original comic (the artist would like to note that the first page is redubbed from her Easy Cheap Ice Cream comic, sample pages of which can be found here), and to LMAbacus for translating and editing it!  Check out the original over on Pixiv, and the translated version after the break!  As usual for translated comics, read from right to left!

Zootopia as a Crime Thriller (By CineFix)

Did you know that Zootopia is in the top 10 Crime Movies on IMDB?  Yeah.  It totally falls into that genre.  But what if it were to go all the way?  What if the trailers were cut to make it as much of a thriller as possible?

Enter CineFix, a channel that recuts trailers for a movie to make them look like they were supposed to be a different genre all along!  They do great work, and it's great to see them give Zootopia the full treatment.

Check it out after the break!
